ERCOT Warns Of Rolling Blackouts This Winter, Next Summer
ERCOT warns extreme weather could threaten reliability during winter, next summer
Texas may have to initiate rolling blackouts again over the winter and the electricity grid’s near-crisis last summer could occur again next summer if extreme weather puts more pressure on the grid than normal, the state’s grid operator warned today.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas should have enough generating capacity this winter to meet demand during normal and colder-than-normal temperatures, even if some units go offline, the grid operator said today. But if more units go offline than is normal, the state may need to trigger rolling blackouts “to maintain the integrity of the system as a whole,” ERCOT warned in a report.
